Day 1 Rendezvous Day!

Today is the day!  It's Day 1 of the very first Route 66 guided tour designed for RVs! Adventure Caravan Wagonmasters Barry and Terry Klein welcomed a dozen guest RVs at the Leisure Lake Resort near Joliet, Illinois for this inaugural caravan. Another Adventure Caravan group of 22 RVs will follow one week behind.  This tour promises to be an exciting 50 days on the historic Route 66 --- all 2,200 miles, from Grant Park in Chicago to the Santa Monica Pier in California!

First created in 1926, Route 66 has been called The Mother Road, The Glory Road, and America's Main Street and we're eager to get started ---- but first, tail gunner Rick Gilbert must complete our rig safety inspections to ensure that each RV is road-ready.  And then, it's time for our Orientation.

After introductions of staff and guests, Barry & Terry gave us our trip logs, complete with turn-by-turn directions, as well as a wonderful resource book describing the thousands of historic spots along the road. We discussed caravan communication procedures that will help us to know what's happening when.  We learned that we'll have days in which we travel in our RVs, as well as days in which we'll travel The Mother Road on a motor coach bus in order to appreciate the urban sections of Route 66 where RV travel would not be wise.  And there will be some rideshare travel as well. Any great trip has some good road food so, of course,  Terry and Sharon made sure we had a great assortment of snacks of fruits, vegetables and salty crunchies while we learned about our tour.

After all that learning, we needed to get started…  We did a rideshare (aka carpooling) to the famous White Fence Farm Restaurant in nearby Romeoville.

This restaurant has served travelers on historic Route 66 since the 1920's and they claim to have the world's best fried chicken --- and it was good! But as good as the family style salads and the huge portions of delicious fried chicken were, it's clear that the sugar coated finger-lickin' corn fritters will be just as memorable!  After browsing through some of the Route 66 memorabilia, we returned to our campground to rest up for tomorrow's bus trip into Chicago --- Mile 0 on Route 66. We hope you'll follow along as we share our adventure.  You may even sign up to receive this blog on your email.  We'll post every few days while we're getting our kicks on Route 66!
